not-so-weekly-update post

Summer is coming to a close. It's about time. I can't handle the non-stop pace, and I sure did try to hang on. Time to get back to reality...back to selfishness, back to myself, back to the grind. It's going to be a rocky transitional period but I'm going to keep that 'boy of summer' smile alive!

Intergalactic Bike Ride

Record of the Week.

I found this record in the basement of a Seattle record shop, Bop Records. America's link between psychedelia and what soon became heavy metal.

Vanilla Fudge [1967]
In a debut consisting of covers, nobody could accuse Vanilla Fudge of bad taste in their repertoire; with stoned-out, slowed-down versions of such then-recent classics as "Ticket to Ride," "Eleanor Rigby," and "People Get Ready," they were setting the bar rather high for themselves. Even the one suspect choice -- Sonny Bono's "Bang Bang" -- turns out to be rivaled only by Mott the Hoople's version of "Laugh at Me" in putting Bono's songwriting in the kindest possible light. Most of the tracks here share a common structure of a disjointed warm-up jam, a Hammond-heavy dirge of harmonized vocals at the center, and a final flat-out jam. Still, some succeed better than others: "You Keep Me Hanging On" has a wonderfully hammered-out drum part, and "She's Not There" boasts some truly groovy organ jams. While the pattern can sound repetitive today, each song still works as a time capsule of American psychedelia.

Wipe Out!

I've been living off of Cliff bars and water lately...bare-bones. I leave for Seattle the day after tomorrow. I will be hanging out for a week, giving my legs a much needed rest!

I wiped out last night @ the HOC Relay Race. I was sprinting down a pitch black road trying to catch up to Chcuk and Brett, who were already leaving the first stop a few minutes before. I was out of my saddle in the drops when i hit something...probably a rock. All I remember is sliding...far, and hearing my helmet scrap against the asphalt. There was some guy in a car who said I slid 10 maybe 20 feet from where I fell, and asked if I was okay. I immediately got up and checked out my bike because it sounded like something snapped, it was hard to tell in the dark but nothing did. I walked back to Erwin to check out my scraps in the light. Then got a ride back to Starbucks.

I cracked my helmet, ripped my bib and jersey, counted 12 scars/bruises on my arms and legs, and had a great time. Next time!

I get so overwhelmed sometimes that my head feels like a ball of extensive things-to-do stickie notes. Summer is always an interesting time. Something is always going on. Today, after Sunday breakfast, we rolled to Zia, got some slurpees, and went to Nathan's house (the lodge). We sat on the patio, listened to music, and just talked about whatever was on our minds. I took it all in: small coffee table full of empty beer cans, magazine, full ashtrays, and random chippery. A smooth, cool breeze drifted through the backyard and we were safe from June's sunlight, under the festive awning. Everyone jumped into the pool and I took a nap in an old Lazy Boy Chair. This is summer.

R.I.P. Jay Bennett

The former Wilco guitarist and Titanic Love Affair founding member passed away in his sleep Saturday night. Bennett was a key contributor to the first half of Wilco's discography, and his contentious relationship with frontman Jeff Tweedy was famously chronicled in the film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.

With all the hype surrounding Wilco right now, I wonder how they are handling it. I feel horrible. He was such an amazing singer/songwriter; and I, ironically, watched Wilco's documentary a few days ago.

Jeff Tweedy released a statement: "We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him -- as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time."

FELT TK2 09

For three months, I waited patiently/impatiently for this bike. But it's here. Aaron and I rolled around downtown looking for a good spot to take photos. We ended up in a back alley behind AT&T, set up, and I let him do his thing. I'm still tweeking it around and seeing what set-up/parts I like best. I can not wait to race on it...

WILCO (the album)

Wilco's seventh album, titled Wilco (the album), is due to be released on June 30th on Nonesuch Records. The Chicago rock band is letting their fans listen to the album a good month in advance. They continue to put out amazing, simple, catchy, rock and roll...and hey...Feist makes a vocal appearance on "You and I". I can not wait to see them play June 19th at the Joint.
