Deerhunter plays BBC Radio6

Atlanta shoe-gaze masters, Deerhunter, give quirky interview and play some songs.

It's business as usual over at the Deerhunter camp. Bradford Cox and crew went over to BBC Radio to play some classics, covers, and a brand new track! The band played "Octet", from 2007's breakthrough Cryptograms, as well as Halcyon Digest highlight "Memory Boy" and a cover of post-punk vanguards Magazine's "The Light Pours Out of Me".

You can listen to it here. 49 minutes into the set, they play a new song "60 Cycle Hum" and then "Memory Boy". Enjoy!

Vay-Cay

Finally taking some time off.
After working for at least a year straight, I finally took some vacation time off. The goal was to race San Dimas Stage Race over the weekend but it quickly sold out. I feel like it was a blessing in disguise, because now I get to lounge around and finally take a rest. At the moment I am sitting on my couch drinking some coffee and watching cycling videos...in languages I don't understand.

I am so excited for all the One-Day Grand Classic races in Belgium this month. Garmin-Cervelo posted a great video on the hybrid super team and their preparation for the classics. the video ends with Haussler training in the mountains for the Milan-San Remo Race, which took place last weekend. It will be interesting to see what unfolds for this team.

Tour de Sol 2011

Took 9th overall in the Tour de Sol...minus the sol.

Last weekend found the NuVision boys in St. George, UT for the Tour de Sol. The forecast predicted cold temperatures, high winds, and possible chance of snow/rain...awesome. Luckily, we only encountered the first two.

Saturday morning was foggy and cold for our 20K Time Trial. This was my first long distance time trial and now I know what I need to work on. While a proper time trial bike would be benefitial, (still not completely necessary, seeing as I only do a few a year) I feel I need to work on pacing myself over longer solo distances. I could blame the high winds and shitty roads but in actuality I could have paced myself better. Time trialing is all in the mind. I took a respective 15th.

Saturday afternoon was our Criterium. After some lunch and rest in our hotel, we ventured across the street (literally) to the Crit course. With super long straights and two U-turns, it was more of a TT. Nathan and I managed to get into the lead break. Nathan took 9th and I took 8th.

Sunday morning brought us to our 40 mile Road Race. With the sun barely up and out we packed up to leave for Gunlock, UT, where our RR began and ended. We drove through the course the day before to get a feel for what the hills and descents looked like and where to attack. In the begining of the race, I was feeling great and knew exactly where to attack; right after the big, long climb which would split the field. A few miles before that I got a flat! I waited for the wheel car and quickly changed my wheel. Thankfully Greg waited and helped me get back to the group. I sprinted up the hill past a lot of riders in order to catch the lead group of 8. But the damage was done, they had momentum descending down the hills and I was left chasing the whole day. I finished 9th, a mere two minutes behind the leader.

After TNW I start my vacation! It's going to be nice lounging around the house hanging with Megan. We celebrate our six month anniversary on Thursday! I need a few days to wind down. I will do some light training to prepare for the Redlands Crit.

Cycling Teams to join in Japan Relief

Many Pro Cycling teams and riders will be auctioning off their jerseys to raise money for the Japanese Earthquake Relief. From Japanese champion Takashi Miyazawa, to Thor Hushovd, to Fabian Cancellara, to Philippe Gilbert; all the big names are throwing in. The auction will benefit a charity chosen by Miyazawa and can be found at www.all1sport.com.

Women's Pro Team Peanut Butter & Co / Twelve/12" will be donating all their winnings in San Dimas Classic to the cause. Trust me, they win all the time! With close to $10,000 in prize money available, PB&C could be writing a big check to Japan.

not-so-weekly update post

Training log and up coming events...

A lot has been going on over at camp Ryan O'Keefe...

It's daylight savings time; which means it's time for Tuesday Night Worlds. TNW is a practice crit over at the Lakes in Summerlin, Tuscany Park in Henderson, and (possibly new location) M Resort in Southern Highlands. I'm unsure as to what the schedule will be, as far as rotating between each venue, but last Tuesday was the first of the season. This race brings all the competing teams from around the valley to sharpen their criterium skills. Nuvision came out in large numbers and I managed to find myself in a breakaway with some very strong riders, which led me to a great finish. I feel in good form.

While the Pros gear up for Milan-San Remo, Tour de Flanders, and other Belgium classics, I am getting ready for Tour de Sol in St. George, Utah. This will be my first race in Utah. A large group from the NuVision Cycling Club will be going up together. The tour consist of a time trial, crit, and road race over two days.

March has been a pretty quiet month for me as far as racing goes. While I am very excited about these few races, I have my mind set on the Redlands Classic Criterium in early April. I'm taking extra time off of work to train and rest before this event. It's not a particularly long or dangerous course but NRC events are always worth a lot of upgrade points. My goal is still to get to a cat(egory) 3 by the end of the season and the best way to achieve that is to perform and finish well in major races.

Back to work I go.

Callville Bay Classic 2011

Took 18th in the 2011 Callville Bay Classic Stage Race.

As I did the year before, I competed in the Callville Bay Classic in Cat4. It was a very rough couple days of racing, with Belgium-like weather and speed.

Day One: Individual Time Trial. I took 7th in this race and was very optimistic about my General Classification chances. The TT was a quick 4 mile, up hill course that treated me well. Luckily, there was a tailwind but the impending rain over the mountains kept all racers nervous for their road race.

Day Two: 57 mile Road Race. I took 26th in this race. This ultimately shot my chances at a top 10 GC finish. Strong cross-winds and rain broke the peloton into two groups. I managed to stay with the lead group for the entire race but got dropped at the very last climb. Fatigue took over my body and going down hills turned into a battle just to keep control of your bike.

Day Three: Crit Race. The sun came out! Other than a brisk morning breeze, the weather was perfect for racing. I took 19th in this race. I knew I couldn't make up enough time to grab a podium or top 10 spot, so I just rode as hard as I could. The pace was fast from the get go!

The plan is to rest up this week and prep for San Dimas Stage Race at the end of next month. I will probably throw in a few crit races in the mix before then though.

More pics here. Thanks Don!

CBR 2

Took top 20th in the very wet and cold CBR #2

Megan and I went to LA this past weekend. She came to watch me race and then go with me to IKEA. It was good getting away for the day. We ate some excellent Japanese food, shopped til we dropped in IKEA, ventured to Melrose for some vintage clothes shopping and Mexican food, and danced to the hoodinternet in my car.

The 2011 season is starting off pretty good. I've learned a lot since last season and hope to make some stronger finishes in the bigger races soon. This weekend is the Callville Bay Classic.

SpiderTech 2011

Team Spidertech gets UCI Professional Continental certification.

Canada is a breeding ground for hockey players. With a sport that demands high speeds, intense muscle power, and suffering; it only seems fitting to try and recruit these athletes to cycling. That’s exactly what Steve Bauer did. Team Spidertech are now poised to leave for Europe and make their way back to the states for a few small tours. The 12 man team will ride Argon 18 Gallium Pros and E-114 for Time Trials.

I started following this team when I first got my Argon 18 and am glad to see their quick rise to success. While Spidertech is a young team they hope to make a name for themselves in the Pro peloton. “By 2013 we hope to reach World Tour status and be invited to race at the Tour de France”. Their race calendar says a few riders will be at Tour of Murrieta and San Dimas Stage Race and I will be there for support!

Miu Miu Women's Tales

The first short film from the Miu Miu Women's Tales series: The Powder Room.

Zoe Cassavetes (Broken English) is the first filmmaker to be announced with The Powder Room, an enchanting and dramatic short film set in London’s Claridges hotel. As its name suggests, the piece takes us into an ultra-feminine environment where gestures between women are traded in a ritual of opulent beauty. In this world Cassavetes uses the romantic codes of the powder room to mirror the beauty and luxury of the Miu Miu universe.

You can watch the short film, behind the scenes, interviews from the director and acctresses over at Miu Miu.com

Boulevard RR and Red Trolley Criterium

Weekend of racing in San Diego...

Saturday morning brought Austin, Nathan, and I to the very remote city of Boulevard, CA. Which is about an hour outside of San Diego and a few minutes from the Mexican American border. The Boulevard RR was a 55 mile road race with 3700 feet of climbing. I took 23rd out of 100.

Sunday brought Austin, Nathan, and I to the heart of San Diego for the Red Trolley Criterium. My legs were pretty heavy from the previous race so I wasn't drilling it too hard. There was a little kicker before the long, long finishing sprint. The cat4 group was unorganized and a few crashes left some injured riders. I managed to stay away from the wreckage and take a respective 24th out of 75.

Getting Ready from RAPHA.

Sometimes the preperation to go out on a ride can be more ritualistic than riding. Rapha once said, there is no such thing as poor riding weather, only poor riding attire.
